Buon Compleanno B(E)AD GIRL BLOG - Intervista a Paolo Riviera, vincitore People's Bead Edizione 2023
Anni in cui ho recensito beads e collezioni di vari brand di gioielli componibili, con predilezione per Trollbeads che, come sapete, è stato il mio primo amore.
Negli ultimi due anni il blog è rimasto fermo, solamente l’omonimo gruppo Facebook sono riuscita a mantenere attivo, seppur con momenti di minor assiduità (causati dagli imprevisti della vita).
Il blog è sempre stato per me una forma di espressione, parole e fotografie su questo mondo così variegato del gioiello componibile.
Oggi, per festeggiare, pubblico la intervista che feci al vincitore del People’s Beads 2023, Paolo Riviera, che spero non me ne vorrà per l’enorme ritardo.
Per chi non ne fosse a conoscenza, il People’s Beads è un concorso che ogni anno Trollbeads indice, dove chiunque può partecipare con un proprio progetto. Il vincitore entrerà a far parte della famiglia dei designer Trollbeads e vedrà il proprio progetto concretizzarsi in bead, e riceverà in premio lo stesso bead realizzato in argento e in oro 18 carati.
Si è da poco conclusa la seconda tornata di votazioni della edizione 2025, dove tra i 24 finalisti bisognava votare i tre preferiti. Ora non resta che attendere il 29 agosto per la proclamazione del vincitore.

Ci racconti come hai ricevuto la notizia e quale è stata la tua reazione?

Dunque, ho ricevuto la notizia via e-mail, ricordo che ero con amici e stavamo passeggiando sul Lago di Garda, avrei voluto condividere subito la bella notizia ma non era ovviamente possibile, ero super felice ed emozionatissimo.
Te la aspettavi o semplicemente ci speravi? Il premio in cosa è consistito?
Non me la aspettavo, ero molto felice di essere nei 24 finalisti, credevo molto nel mio progetto e ovviamente ci speravo. Il premio è stato un bracciale in argento con il mio Bead realizzato in oro e ovviamente la soddisfazione di essere entrato nella famiglia di designer Trollbeads.

Per il terzo anno consecutivo l’Italia è protagonista dell’ormai famigerato concorso Trollbeads, l’anno precedente fu per mano di Patrizia Tinelli con il suo “Fiori di Pesco”, mentre nel 2021 vinse Gaetano Preti “Sparrow” con il “Pendente Cielo Stellato”, entrambi beads in vetro.
Quest’anno però a vincere è un progetto in argento.
Paolo, prediligi i beads in argento o i beads in vetro?
Mi piacciono molto sia “Fiori di Pesco” che il “Pendente Cielo Stellato”, in generale mi piacciono sia i beads in vetro sia i beads in argento ma trovo che questi ultimi siano quelli che amo di più indossare.

Al concorso avevi partecipato con altri progetti. Sei soddisfatto d’aver vinto con questo o avresti preferito vedere riprodotto un altro dei tuoi design?
Sì sono molto soddisfatto di aver vinto con il progetto “Atomo dell’Unione”, tra i progetti che ho presentato al concorso era il mio preferito.
A proposito di design, i progetti che hai presentato sono da te realizzati a mano libera, ti piace quindi disegnare, una attitudine che hai da sempre o una passione nuova? Raccontaci.
Direi che è un attitudine che ho dai tempi della scuola, non mi ritengo un grande disegnatore però me la sono sempre cavata. Partecipare all’evento “People's Bead” forse è servito anche a risvegliare questa passione un po' dimenticata.
Il significato legato ad “Atomo dell’Unità” è semplice ma al tempo stesso evocativo, cosa significa realmente per te la parola “unità”?
Se penso alla parola unità o alla parola unione penso a qualcosa di compiuto, a qualcosa di realizzato, a un legame. L’unione di intenti, l’unione tra amici, l’essere uniti e non divisi, penso ad un insieme che pur formato da elementi diversi risulta comunque unitario. Atomo dell’Unità o Atomo dell’unione ci ricorda appunto che dalle cose piccole nasce il legame più forte dell’unione.

Paolo, ora narraci un poco di ciò che ti appassiona maggiormente.
Partiamo ovviamente da Trollbeads: da quanti anni sei collezionista del marchio di componibili? Ricordi quale fu il tuo primo bead?
Ho indossato il mio primo bracciale Trollbeads circa 6 o 7 anni fa, era un bracciale con la chiusura nodo di Freia, i miei primi beads sono stati “Ritmo della Vita” e “Cambio di Rotta” poi ho aggiunto alcuni stop, mi piaceva l’idea di avere un bracciale con tanti piccoli beads in argento. Mi piace indossare più bracciali contemporaneamente ma sempre con pochi beads. In generale non ne possiedo tanti, pertanto non mi ritengo un vero e proprio collezionista.

Oltre i gioielli, quali interessi nutrono il tuo animo?
Per quanto riguarda altri interessi, posso dire di avere una passione per il giardinaggio e per i bonsai. Amo inoltre praticare sport come trekking e andare in bici e amo viaggiare.

Da appassionato di beads, quando componi un bracciale lo fai con il puro gusto estetico o cerchi di raccontare una storia, una emozione?
Direi un buon 50 e 50, sicuramente mi deve piacere a livello estetico ma allo stesso tempo cerco nei beads i significati che più mi rappresentano.

Immaginando di partecipare anche il prossimo anno, cosa miglioreresti, a livello “tecnico”, nel concorso?
Io, ad esempio, metterei senza dubbio un limite alle opere da potere presentare, tre potrebbe essere il numero perfetto, al fine di facilitare il lavoro dei giudici che, spesso, non sono in grado di vederle tutte poiché il sistema stesso di votazione risulta ripetitivo e alquanto lacunoso.
Si, sicuramente ci sono cose che andrebbero migliorate. Penso alla prima fase di votazione, non è molto chiaro come vengono presentati i progetti, inoltre sono pienamente d’accordo con te, mettere un limite alle opere oltre a facilitare il lavoro dei giudici servirebbe anche ad avere in generale dei progetti più belli perché la prima selezione la farebbero gli stessi Designer scegliendo di caricare solo le idee migliori.
Per molti appassionati e collezionisti, divenire designer Trollbeads è un sogno. Il tuo si è avverato. Cosa suggerisci a chi intende intraprendere questa avventura ed a chi ci prova da tempo senza successo?
Ero già arrivato in finale altre volte, ma questa volta il sogno si è avverato! Posso solo suggerire di continuare a provarci e crederci. Non serve essere dei bravi disegnatori, serve una bella idea e saperla comunicare nel modo giusto. Penso sia molto importante descrivere bene il progetto e il suo significato e presentare un disegno anche semplice che catturi l’attenzione della giuria.
Quando un paio di mesi fa erano uscite, sicuramente per errore (o forse no), su di un sito Trollbeads le prime immagini della nuova collezione autunnale, tra i vari bead c’era anche il tuo Atomo dell’Unità. Non è passato inosservato agli occhi di attenti collezionisti, soprattutto a quelli che collezionano anche altri brand.
Il tuo bead risulta assomigliare molto a un bead precedentemente realizzato da OHM BEADS “Atom”. A dire il vero, come è già stato scritto da più persone, un atomo è un atomo e la sua rappresentazione non può discostarsi più di tanto da come è. Il tuo design ricorda quello di Ohm ma nella realizzazione Trollbeads ha reso maggiormente tondeggiante la miniatura in argento, diversificandola. Eri a conoscenza della esistenza del bead di Ohm beads? Come ti è venuta l’idea di questo bead in particolare?
Un atomo, come abbiamo già detto, è un atomo e per quanto mi riguarda trovo sia stato realizzato molto bene.
Non conosco Ohm beads e non sapevo dell’esistenza di questo bead. Volevo che il mio bead rappresentasse qualcosa che avesse a che fare con l’universo, lo spazio e l’infinito.
Mi ha sempre affascinato il cosmo, da bambino amavo guardare le stelle in cielo e cercare di identificare i pianeti e le costellazioni. Di fatto l’atomo ricorda molto, nel suo schema, i sistemi Planetari: così come i pianeti ruotano attorno ad una stella, gli elettroni ruotano attorno al nucleo dell’atomo. Ho pensato quindi che un atomo potesse rappresentare questa idea che siamo piccoli ma destinati a qualcosa di infinito.
Il mio bead doveva rappresentare qualcosa di importante, di unico e di speciale. Doveva piacermi per il suo significato, ma anche per la sua forma che volevo fosse semplice e versatile, che stesse bene sia su bracciali sia su collane, mi sono sempre piaciuti i beads tondeggianti ed anche un po' astratti.
Non penso Trollbeads abbia reso più tondeggiante il beads rispetto al mio progetto. Le tre orbite degli elettroni sono 3 diametri di una sfera che si intersecano a 90 gradi sia nel mio progetto sia nel beads realizzato, la differenza sta nel fatto che nel mio disegno l’atomo è più sottile e anche leggermente sovradimensionato rispetto al bracciale disegnato, tenendo centralmente la cavità generata dalle tre orbite degli elettroni. In questo modo risalta molto di più lo schema dell’atomo. Immaginavo che in fase di realizzazione sarebbe stato più tozzo, tuttavia anch’io trovo che sia stato realizzato molto bene. Sono molto contento del risultato finale. Mi piace molto la scanalatura interna delle orbite che conferisce robustezza al beads mantenendo un aspetto di “leggerezza” esternamente.
Paolo, a conclusione di questa intervista, dicci un po’… regaleresti o hai mai regalato Trollbeads a qualcuno, condividendo questa passione?
Si mi piace regalare bracciali e beads e l’ ho fatto in più occasioni, anzi come già ti dicevo non mi reputo un collezionista, penso che siano pìù i beads che ho regalato di quelli che ho acquistato per me. Li ho regalati a mia mamma, a mio fratello e ad amici. Le occasioni principali sono i compleanni o le festività natalizie; per mia mamma temi floreali e vetri sfaccettati, mentre ad amici ho sempre regalato beads in argento cercando sovente un buon compromesso tra estetica e significato.
Paolo grazie per avere accettato di essere intervistato e complimenti ancora per la tua vittoria, Atomo dell’Unione (€45) è un bead molto bello e versatile, che si presta a più utilizzi, sia in doppio bracciale, come hai mostrato, sia per accorciare la collana fantasia.
Le tue passioni, imperniate sulla natura, tra viaggi e giardinaggio, rivelano un animo sensibile, con la predisposizione al bello che c’è, poiché in ogni cosa vi è meraviglia e, come avrebbe detto Oscar Wilde “Il guardare una cosa è ben diverso dal vederla, non si vede una cosa finché non se ne vede la bellezza”.
Approfitto di questo compleanno del blog per dirvi (o ricordarvi) che, oltre il blog appunto, la passione per il componibile mi ha portata a creare una mia piccola linea di gioielli e da un anno a questa parte la mia Lunatique ha preso vita!

Today, March 27, 2025, my blog turns 6.
Years in which I have reviewed beads and collections from various brands of modular jewelry, with a preference for Trollbeads which, as you know, was my first love.
In the last two years the blog has remained stationary, only the Facebook group of the same name I have managed to keep active, albeit with moments of less assiduity (caused by the unexpected events of life).
For me, the blog has always been a form of expression, words and photographs on this very varied world of modular jewelry.
Today, to celebrate, I am publishing the interview I did with the winner of the People's Beads 2023, Paolo Riviera, who I hope will not be angry with me for the enormous delay.
For those who are not aware, the People's Beads is a competition that Trollbeads organizes every year, where anyone can participate with their own project. The winner will become part of the Trollbeads designer family and will see their project materialize in beads, and will receive the same bead made of silver and 18-karat gold as a prize.
The second round of voting for the 2025 edition has just ended, where you had to vote for your three favorites among the 24 finalists. Now all that remains is to wait until August 29th for the winner to be announced.
Interview with Paolo Riviera, winner of People’s Beads Trollbeads 2023
Paolo, congratulations on the victory!
Can you tell us how you received the news and what was your reaction?
Thanks Elena!
Well, I received the news via email, I remember that I was with friends and we were walking on Lake Garda, I wanted to share the good news right away but it was obviously not possible, I was super happy and very excited.
Did you expect it or did you just hope for it? What did the prize consist of?
I didn't expect it, I was very happy to be among the 24 finalists, I really believed in my project and obviously I hoped for it. The prize was a silver bracelet with my Bead made in gold and of course the satisfaction of having joined the Trollbeads family of designers.

For the third consecutive year, Italy is the protagonist of the Trollbeads competition, the previous year it was by Patrizia Tinelli with her “Peach Blossom Bead”, while in 2021 Gaetano Preti won “Sparrow” with the “Wishful Sky Tassel”, both glass beads.
This year, however, the winner is a silver project.
Paolo, do you prefer silver beads or glass beads?
I really like both “Peach Blossom Bead” and the “Wishful Sky Tassel”, in general I like both glass beads and silver beads but I find that the latter are the ones I love to wear the most.

You had participated in the competition with other projects. Are you satisfied with having won with this one or would you have preferred to see another of your designs reproduced?
Yes, I am very satisfied with having won with the “Atom of Unity Bead” project, among the projects I submitted to the competition it was my favorite.
Speaking of design, the projects you presented are made by you freehand, so do you like drawing, an aptitude that you have always had or a new passion? Tell us.
I would say that it is an aptitude that I have had since school, I do not consider myself a great drawer but I have always managed. Participating in the “People's Bead” event perhaps also served to reawaken this somewhat forgotten passion.
The meaning linked to “Atom of Unity Bead” is simple but at the same time evocative, what does the word “unity” really mean to you?
When I think of the word unity or the word union I think of something accomplished, something achieved, a bond. The union of intents, the union between friends, being united and not divided, I think of a whole that even if formed by different elements is still unitary. Atom of Unity or Atom of Union reminds us that from small things the strongest bond of union is born.

Paolo, now tell us a little about what you are most passionate about.
Let's start with Trollbeads: how many years have you been a collector of the modular brand? Do you remember what your first bead was?
I wore my first Trollbeads bracelet about 6 or 7 years ago, it was a bracelet with the Freja Knot Lock, my first beads were “Rhythm of Life Bead! and “Route Change Bead” then I added some stops, I liked the idea of having a bracelet with lots of small silver beads. I like to wear multiple bracelets at the same time but always with just a few beads. In general I don't own many, so I don't consider myself a real collector.

Besides jewelry, what interests nourish your soul?
As for other interests, I can say that I have a passion for gardening and bonsai. I also love practicing sports such as trekking and cycling and I love traveling.

As a bead enthusiast, when you compose a bracelet do you do it with pure aesthetic taste or do you try to tell a story, an emotion?
I would say a good 50 and 50, I certainly have to like it on an aesthetic level but at the same time I look for the meanings in the beads that best represent me.

Imagining to participate again next year, what would you improve, on a “technical” level, in the competition?
For example, I would definitely put a limit on the works that can be presented, three could be the perfect number, in order to facilitate the work of the judges who, often, are not able to see them all because the voting system itself is repetitive and somewhat lacking.
Yes, there are certainly things that should be improved. I think of the first voting phase, it is not very clear how the projects are presented, furthermore I fully agree with you, putting a limit on the works in addition to facilitating the work of the judges would also serve to have more beautiful projects in general because the first selection would be made by the Designers themselves choosing to upload only the best ideas.
For many enthusiasts and collectors, becoming a Trollbeads designer is a dream. Yours has come true. What do you suggest to those who intend to undertake this adventure and to those who have been trying for a long time without success?
I have already reached the finals other times, but this time the dream has come true! I can only suggest to keep trying and believing. You don’t need to be a good designer, you need a good idea and to know how to communicate it in the right way. I think it’s very important to describe the project and its meaning well and to present a simple drawing that captures the jury’s attention.
When the first images of the new autumn collection were released a couple of months ago, surely by mistake (or maybe not), on a Trollbeads website, among the various beads there was also your Atom of Unity. It did not go unnoticed by the eyes of attentive collectors, especially those who also collect other brands.
Your bead turns out to be very similar to a bead previously made by OHM BEADS “Atom”. To tell the truth, as has already been written by several people, an atom is an atom and its representation cannot differ too much from how it is. Your design is reminiscent of Ohm's but in the realization Trollbeads made the silver miniature more rounded, diversifying it. Were you aware of the existence of the Ohm beads bead? How did you get the idea for this bead in particular?
An atom, as we have already said, is an atom and as far as I am concerned I think it was made very well.
I don't know Ohm beads and I didn't know about the existence of this bead. I wanted my bead to represent something that had to do with the universe, space and infinity.
I have always been fascinated by the cosmos, as a child I loved looking at the stars in the sky and trying to identify the planets and constellations. In fact, the atom is very reminiscent, in its scheme, of the Planetary systems: just as the planets rotate around a star, the electrons rotate around the nucleus of the atom. I therefore thought that an atom could represent this idea that we are small but destined for something infinite.
My bead had to represent something important, unique and special. I had to like it for its meaning, but also for its shape that I wanted to be simple and versatile, that would look good on both bracelets and necklaces, I have always liked rounded and even slightly abstract beads.
I don't think Trollbeads made the bead more rounded than my design. The three electron orbits are 3 diameters of a sphere that intersect at 90 degrees both in my design and in the bead made, the difference is that in my design the atom is thinner and also slightly oversized compared to the bracelet designed, keeping the cavity generated by the three electron orbits centrally. In this way the atom scheme stands out much more. I imagined that during the realization phase it would have been more squat, however I also find that it was made very well. I am very happy with the final result. I really like the internal groove of the orbits that gives strength to the bead while maintaining a "light" appearance externally.
Paolo, to conclude this interview, tell us a little… would you give or have you ever given Trollbeads to someone, sharing this passion?
Yes, I like giving bracelets and beads as gifts and I have done so on several occasions, in fact as I already told you I don’t consider myself a collector, I think I have given away more beads than I have bought for myself. I have given them to my mother, my brother and friends. The main occasions are birthdays or Christmas holidays; for my mother floral themes and faceted glass, while for friends I have always given silver beads, often seeking a good compromise between aesthetics and meaning.
Paolo, thank you for accepting to be interviewed and congratulations again for your victory, Atom of Unity Bead (€45) is a very beautiful and versatile bead, which lends itself to multiple uses, both in a double bracelet, as you showed, and to shorten the fantasy necklace.
Your passions, centered on nature, between travel and gardening, reveal a sensitive soul, with the predisposition to beauty that is there, because in everything there is wonder and, as Oscar Wilde would have said "To look at a thing is very different from seeing a thing. One does not see anything until one sees its beauty".
