Intervista con la collezionista Karin Gillett - Interview with the collector Karin Gillett

A fianco ai beads ed ai loro creatori c'è un mondo parallelo, quello dei collezionisti e degli appassionati.
Con le mie interviste intendo mettere in luce questo mondo offrendo un punto di vista per conoscere le persone che lo abitano.
Da tempo desideravo intervistare Karin e ricevere la sua immediata disponibilità è stata per me una soddisfazione.

Karin è conosciuta nel mondo dei beads come fondatrice del gruppo "Addicted2beads - A2B - sharing, not selling" (che amministra insieme ad altre tre persone) e del gruppo "Sales/trades@A2B (A2BS)" (che amministra insieme a due persone) ma è altresì conosciuta per la sua abilità nel creare abbinamenti fantasiosi tra beads ed altro genere di gioielli.

Karin ritengo abbia una bella visione della vita che trasmette attraverso il suo modo di porsi, di scrivere, di "giocare", di creare rete tra i vari collezionisti, attraverso anche una straordinaria apertura e disponibilità verso tutti, una persona generosa insomma ed ho avuto conferma di questo mio pensiero grazie alle parole che ci siamo scambiate durante questa intervista in cui, addirittura, si dice onorata di essere stata scelta per celebrare l'anniversario del mio blog che, letteralmente, "le piace un sacco"!
Karin, credimi, l'onore è tutto mio!

Karin Gillett, è cresciuta in Michigan (U.S.A.) ma ha vissuto la sua vita lavorativa in Florida, dove risiede tutt'ora.
Nel corso degli anni ha svolto differenti lavori, tra cui impiegata presso la IBM e proprietaria di un negozio.
Ora Karin si adopera presso la chiesa del suo paese.
Ha tanti interessi e una "infarinatura", come lei stessa dice, in termini di conoscenza, su molte cose.
Ama viaggiare, adora l'arte e la moda, una passione cresciuta durante il lavoro.
Karin è una persona creativa, in passato ha svolto lavori manuali come il punto croce, il lavoro a maglia e all'uncinetto, realizzando parecchi guanti, sciarpe, scialli e poncho, con filati particolari, che riscuotevano successo ma lei non li ha mai venduti, nonostante la richiesta preferiva regalarli.
Appassionata lettrice ora però predilige giocare con i beads, meglio se a tarda notte con la Tv accesa in sottofondo.

Da quanto tempo collezioni beads e quale marchio hai conosciuto per primo?

Mi sono occupata di pietre semi preziose e perle molto prima di iniziare con i beads, realizzando bracciali, collane e orecchini per me o per fare dei regali. Ho partecipato a fiere di minerali locali, comprando un solo filo di cose che amavo, senza alcuna idea di cosa avrei potuto fare con loro, certa comunque che la musa avrebbe colpito.
Ho collezionato per la prima volta bracciali in stile "Nomination". Temevo le applicazioni potessero staccarsi, ma non lo fecero mai.
Probabilmente ho iniziato a collezionare Trollbeads intorno al 1998, perché ricordo che nel 2000 rifiutai l'acquisto dell'ormai ritirato Trollbeads "Crane", con mio successivo rammarico. Difatti poi ho dovuto cercarlo e pagare un sovrapprezzo.
Ricordo anche "Silver Fruit" e "Bead of Prophecy" ma li avevo rifiutati poiché non possedevano l'aspetto che stavo cercando. Avevo già un anello simile a "Silver Fruit" che però non indossavo.
Wow! Ho pensato che $30 a bead fosse caro in quel momento (non mi importava però quanto costasse "Nomination", in particolare la linea Disney, per esempio).
Se solo avessimo immaginato dove sarebbero finiti i prezzi dei beads!
Ai tempi in cui sono stata introdotta verso questo genere di beads, non ero certa che mi sarebbero piaciuti tanto e pensavo mi bastasse un unico bracciale. Coloro che mi conoscono ora rideranno di questo!
Sono stata così molto fortunata quando un negozio locale ha conosciuto Trollbeads ad una fiera di oggetti da regalo e ha deciso di rivenderli.
Il negozio vendeva sia Pandora che Trollbeads, quando era possibile, e il proprietario mi ha aiutata a scegliere con cura i beads di quello che pensavo sarebbe stato il mio unico bracciale. Penso di aver acquistato uno o due beads a settimana all'epoca. Da lì in poi è cresciuto.
Ora dubito che indosserei quel braccialetto originale, LOL

In quale momento hai capito che i beads sarebbero diventati una tua grande passione?

Penso sia stato all'incirca nel periodo in cui ho trovato il Forum di Trollbeads Gallery: incontrare persone di tutto il mondo, vedere i progetti di queste persone, la gioia di connettersi.


Ricordi quale è stato il primissimo bead che hai acquistato?

Sinceramente non lo ricordo.

Ormai da alcuni anni, nel mondo dei gruppi Facebook, sei molto conosciuta, tu stessa ne hai fondato uno. Quanti anni fa di preciso?

Ho creato il gruppo originale su Ning (n.d.r. Ning è una piattaforma per la creazione di social network, nata in California nel 2004), ma pone un limite di persone che possono aderire gratuitamente. Dal momento che non ho un negozio che vende beads (e solo molto raramente vendo o scambio qualcuno dei miei) il gruppo ha dovuto rimanere ristretto in quanto non finanziato dalle vendite.
Il concetto di ricerca, lo stesso di Facebook: trovare artigiani e altri marchi ed essere in grado di mescolarli sui tuoi progetti (poiché quasi tutti i miei sono misti). All'epoca non era permesso parlare di altri in un sito di uno specifico marchio o di mostrare immagini con bracciali composti in modo misto. C'erano molti file su Ning, come su Facebook.
Una volta vista la facilità d'uso di Facebook, dove non c'è un limite al numero di membri in un gruppo, gratuito e molto agevole per mostrare le foto, ho cambiato.
È stata una decisione perfetta, presa nel luglio 2013.
Ho limitato il numero dei membri (poi ampliato un po') per mantenere il gruppo più intimo, per poterci conoscere meglio ed essere sicuri nella condivisione e nella vendita (attraverso l'elenco delle persone iscritte).
Non ho mai aspirato ad avere un gruppo più grande ma piuttosto fidato (e sicuro).
E voglio precisare che in entrambi i miei gruppi godo di grande aiuto.

Nel tuo gruppo si parla sia di marchi affermati che di artigiani. Quali sono i tuoi preferiti di entrambi?

Il mio primo amore è Trollbeads, poiché sono più interessanti, a mio parere, di Pandora. Possiedo dei charms Pandora, che adoro, compresi alcuni dei loro pavé, ma ne ho acquistati davvero pochi negli ultimi anni. Ho preferito Trollbeads a Pandora per i beads in vetro.
Chamilia ha dei beads meravigliosi ma non ho acquistato gran parte dei loro beads in vetro poiché più piccoli e costosi rispetto Trollbeads.

OHM Beads sono divertenti quando non sono troppo irriverenti. Di OHM Beads ci sono alcuni beads che prediligo come la serie dedicata alla Luna, le parole, le lettere da macchina da scrivere così come la serie OhMyGod e Inner Self. Apprezzo anche i piccoli beads come Uglydoll che indosso in un bracciale di tessuto elastico ripiegabile, affinché i beads non si girino e amo la forma dei loro vetri perché sono differenti.
Riguardo le pietre invece penso che, per la maggior parte, Trollbeads abbia un prezzo eccessivo rispetto agli artigiani che le perforano e rivettano, trovando anche pietre più intriganti.
Ringrazio Andrea Turnbull di "Sticks and Stones", membro del mio gruppo, per aver mostrato le sue pietre, mi ha così aperto una nuova visione.
Ci sono molti artigiani meravigliosi che lavorano nel vetro con disegni davvero fantastici e ce ne sono altrettanti che lavorano l'argento. La maggior parte delle lavorazioni eseguite in piccoli lotti, in quanto un artigiano realizza tutto a mano.
Alcuni nomi? Aldo Giannone per i beads in vetro, Vanessa Stevenson Marshall e Beads in Opera per i beads in argento.


Nei gruppi può accadere che una amicizia virtuale divenga reale e ci si incontri. Ti è mai capitato?

Oh si! Considero molti di loro miei amici e alcuni li ho incontrati nella vita reale.
È così facile rimanere connessi l'un l'altro.
Rido quando le persone dicono che gli amici online non sono veri amici. Sì, lo sono invece!

Spesso negli Stati Uniti vengono creati degli eventi speciali che riguardano i beads, hai mai partecipato ad uno di questi di persona? Se sì, ti è piaciuto?

No, non vi ho mai partecipato. Nessun evento è mai stato vicino a dove abito. Due poi sono avvenuti in concomitanza con date importanti nella mia vita.
Mi piacerebbe incontrare persone, ma realisticamente preferirei acquistare beads piuttosto che pagare per i voli e un hotel.
Ho approfittato delle vendite online della maggior parte di questi eventi.
Mi diverto a guardare le foto, comprare dalla mia sedia e "incontrare" la gente in questo modo.
Naturalmente anche in altri paesi ci sono eventi: Spagna, Germania, Danimarca, solo per citarne alcuni (n.d.r. Mhmm non così tanti come negli Stati Uniti).

Ciascuno di noi ha un proprio criterio per comporre e creare, a cosa ti ispiri quando componi un bracciale?


In genere compro solo quello che mi piace, senza avere un'idea in particolare su come potrei usarlo. La maggior parte dei miei bracciali sono realizzati in composizioni permanenti. All'inizio ho comprato singoli beads poi ho cercato l'equilibrio, non la simmetria, ma quando sono apparsi i bangles, ho avuto bisogno di coppie di beads (quindi acquistandone un secondo o direttamente un paio).
A un certo punto ho analizzato i braccialetti che indossavo e amavo di più e mi sono resa conto che mi piacevano quelli con più di un colore. Raramente indossavo quelli monocromatici, quindi li ho riprogettati, che è la bellezza di questo sistema componibile. Non ci si annoia.
A volte "saccheggio" una composizione, quando vedo una grande idea mostrata da qualcun altro, al fine di avere un bead o più beads per realizzare qualcosa di simile.

Oltre ai beads quali altri gioielli ti piace indossare? Ne hai uno del cuore che non togli mai dal polso?

Dunque, il mio set di nozze e gli anelli preferiti (incluso Pandora) che non devono per forza essere costosi.
Adesso mi piace molto la Tanzanite. Indosso alcuni braccialetti che mi sono stati regalati e braccialetti con il mio nome e il nome di mia figlia maggiore (non è più possibile acquistarli con lo stesso stile, altrimenti li avrei anche nei nomi delle mie altre figlie). Nel profondo sono un po' come una figlia dei fiori, quindi stratifico collane e bracciali. Li indosso per gratificare me stessa, anche se mio marito dice che gli piace guardarli.

 

Proprio in questi giorni è iniziato il concorso di Trollbeads "Peoples Bead". Hai mai partecipato, in veste di designer? Cosa ne pensi di questo discusso concorso? Molti pensano che sia divenuto, per Trollbeads, una mera occasione per accumulare idee a cui attingere al bisogno. Sei d'accordo?


Sì, ho partecipato il primo anno insieme a mia figlia, che è un'artista. Penso ancora che i progetti che abbiamo presentato siano buone idee.
Credo la competizione sia un fiasco. Molti dei disegni presentati sono facilmente reperibili in altri marchi (i cupcakes, ad esempio). Accade anche per alcuni che sono arrivati in finale e penso sia terribile.
Davvero Trollbeads non lo sa?!
Le persone non seguono le regole stabilite e nessuna di queste viene eliminata prima della prima votazione. Il voto richiede troppo tempo, così mi arrendo. Non ci dovrebbe essere un'opzione per nessuno dei due.
E sì, penso che Trollbeads abbia usato alcune delle idee dopo il concorso.


 

Puoi raccontarci una curiosità su di te?

Le mie due figlie più giovani sono state adottate dalla Cina nel 1997 e nel 1999. Sono tornata in Cina con loro e l'altra mia figlia nel 2001 per prendere parte a un film documentario sull'adozione cinese, realizzato per il governo cinese. Sono stata molto attiva nelle adozioni cinesi, avviando tanti singoli elenchi di servizi sui gruppi Yahoo, per poi trasferirli ad altri. Conservo ancora l'unico elenco con i precetti per le persone adulte adottate, in cui i genitori adottivi devono ascoltare, non scartare ciò che viene detto. Ho molti cari amici, genitori e adottati adulti, da quel quel gruppo. Il mio co-assistente è stato adottato dalla Corea. 

A conclusione di questa intervista ti domando: sei mai stata in Italia? Se sì, quali città hai visitato?


Sì, amo l'Italia e vi sono stata più di una volta. Ho partecipato a due tour "Globus" che ci hanno portato in Italia e una crociera da Roma a Israele. Ho guidato parecchio attraverso l'Italia e nelle città visitate: Roma, il Vaticano,Venezia, Firenze, Napoli, Pompei, Capri.
Mi piacerebbe tornare!
Ricordo che ho cercato Trollbeads dietro l'angolo della scalinata di Piazza di Spagna e ho fatto molta strada per trovare il negozio Tedora con beads di città italiane. E ovunque tu guardi in Italia è tutto molto bello.


Karin, se tornerai in Italia ti aspetto a Modena, così ti farò visitare la città di Pavarotti, tenore di fama mondiale, di Enzo Ferrari patron della famosa Ferrari di Formula 1 e non solo, della Maserati, della buona cucina, basti pensare al pluristellato chef Bottura, e dello splendido Duomo con la incomparabile Ghirlandina che sono stati dichiarati dall'Unesco Patrimonio dell'Umanità.

INTERVIEW WITH THE COLLECTOR KARIN GILLETT
  

Next to the beads and their creators there is a parallel world, that of collectors and passionate.
With my interviews I intend to highlight this world by offering a point of view to get to know the people who live there.
For a long time I wanted to interview Karin and receiving her immediate availability was a satisfaction for me.
Karin is known in the world of beads as the founder of the group "Addicted2beads - A2B - sharing, not selling" (which she manages with three other people) and of the group "Sales / trades @ A2B (A2BS)" (which she administers with two people ) but it is also known for its ability to create imaginative combinations between beads and other types of jewelry.

I believe that Karin has a beautiful vision of life that she transmits through her way of posing, writing, "playing", creating networks among the various collectors, through an extraordinary openness and availability to everyone, in short, a generous person and I have had confirmation of my thoughts thanks to the words we exchanged during this interview in which, even, she says she is honored to have been chosen to celebrate the anniversary of my blog which, literally, "she enjoy a lot"!
Karin, believe me, the honor is all mine!

Karin Gillett, was raised in Michigan (U.S.A.) but lived her working life in Florida, where she still resides.
Over the years she has carried out different jobs, including employed at IBM and owner of a shop.
Now Karin works at the church in her country.
She has many interests and a "smattering", as she herself says, in terms of knowledge, on many things.
She loves to travel, she loves art and fashion, a passion grown during work.
Karin is a creative person, in the past she has done much hand-work such as cross stitch, knitting and crochet, making several gloves, scarves, shawls and ponchos, with particular yarns, which met with success but she never sold them despite the request he preferred to give them away.
A passionate reader, however, she now prefers to play with beads, preferably late at night with the TV on in the background.

How long have you been collecting beads and which brand did you know first?

I worked with semi-precious gems and pearls long before I started with big-hole beads, making bracelets, necklaces and earrings for me or for gifts. I would attend local gem shows, buy a single strand of things I loved, without any idea what I might do with them.  Then the muse would hit.
I first collected Nomination-style bracelets.  I was afraid the designs might shear off, but they never did.
I probably started collecting Troll around 1998, because in  2000, I turned down the now retired TB Crane, to my regret. Then I had to search for it and pay a premium.
I also saw Silver Fruit and the Beads of Prophecy, and turned them down, as they were not the look I was going for.  I already had a ring similar to Silver Fruit that I didn’t wear.
Wow! I thought $30 for one bead was a lot at the time (never mind what the Nomination cost, especially Disney, for example).
If we only knew where prices would head!
At the time when I was introduced to this style of beading I wasn’t sure if I would like them and thought I might have only one bracelet. Those who know me now will laugh at that! .
I was very fortunate that a local store found Trollbeads at the gift mart and decided to carry them.
The store carried both Pandora and Trollbeads, when that was possible, and the owner carefully helped me to choose what I thought would be my only bracelet. I think I bought one or two beads at week.
It grew from there. Now I doubt I would wear that original bracelet, LOL


At what moment did you understand that beads would become your great passion?

I think it was about the time that I found Trollbeads Gallery Forum: meeting people around the world, seeing other people’s designs, the joy of connecting.




Do you remember which was the very first bead you bought?

I really don’t.


For some years now, in the world of Facebook groups, you are very well known, you have founded one yourself. How many years ago exactly?

I started the original group at Ning (Ed. Ning is a platform for creating social networks, born in California in 2004), but they had a limit to how many could join for free. Since I don’t have a store selling beads (and only very very rarely sell or trade any of mine) the group had to remain small as it wasn’t being financed by sales.
The concept was the same as now on Facebook: to find artisans and other brands and be able to mix them on your designs (as nearly all mine are mixed).  At the time, you were not allowed to talk about another brand at a brand site or show pictures that were mixed. There were extensive files at Ning, as on Facebook.
Once I saw the ease of Facebook, that there isn’t a limit to the number of members in a group, that it is free, that it is very easy to show pictures, I switched over.
It was a perfect decision, made in July 2013.
I have capped the list of members (and then expanded a bit) to keep it more intimate, so we might know each other more, and be safe in sharing and selling (at the companion list.) I never aspired to having the biggest list, but I did want it to be kind (and safe.)
And I want to specify that in both my groups I have great help.

In your group we talk about both established brands and craftsmen. What are your favorites of both?

My first love is Trollbeads, as they are more interesting to me than Pandora. I have Pandora, which I also love, including some of their pavé, but very little in recent years. I preferred Trollbeads over Pandora for the glass.
Chamilia had some wonderful beads, but I didn’t get much of their glass as it was small for more money than Trollbeads.
OHM Beads are fun when they aren’t being too snarky. There are a few beads that I like about Ohm like the Moon series, the words, the typewriter letters as well as the OhmyGod series and Inner Self. I also appreciate the small beads like Uglydoll that I wear in an fold-over elastic bracelet so that the bead does not turn and I love the shape of their glass because they are different.

I think for stones, for the most part, Trollbeads is over-priced compared to the artisans who drill and core them. Those artisans find more intriguing stones.  I credit one of the members in my group for showing her stones, and that got me started in that direction.
There are many wonderful craftsmen who work in glass with really fantastic designs and there are just as many who work in silver. Most of the processes carried out in small batches, as a craftsman makes everything by hand.
Some names? Aldo Giannone for the glass beads, Vanessa Stevenson Marshall and Beads in Opera for the silver beads.

In groups it can happen that a virtual friendship becomes real and we meet. Has it ever happened to you?


Oh, yes! I consider many my friends, and some I have met in real life. It is so easy to stay connected.
I laugh when people say online friends aren’t real friends. Yes, they are!


Often special events are created in the United States concerning beads, have you ever attended one of these in person? If yes, did you like it?

I have not. None have been close to me. Two have conflicted with other dates in my life. I would love to meet people, but realistically I’d rather buy beads than pay for flights and a hotel. I have taken advantage of the online sales most of these events have.
I have fun watching the pictures, buying from my chair, ‘meeting’ folks in that way too.
Of course other countries have them too: Spain, Germany, Denmark, to name a few (n.d.r. Mhmm not as many as in the United States).




Each of us has its own criteria for composing and creating, at what did do you inspire when you compose a bracelet?

I generally just buy what I like, without an idea particularly how I might use it. Most of mine are made up in permanent designs. At first I bought singles, so I went for balance, not symmetry, but once bangles came into effect, I needed pairs (so I might buy a second, or I bought a pair).
At one point I analyzed the bracelets I wore and loved the most, and I realized I liked ones with more than one color. I rarely wore ones that were monochrome, so then I redesigned, which is the beauty of this system. You don’t have to be bored.
I will sometimes plunder a design, when I see a great idea someone else shows, in order to get to a bead or beads to do something similar.



In addition to the beads, what other jewels do you like to wear? Do you have one of your heart that you never take off your wrist?

Well, my wedding set and favorite rings (including Pandora) they don’t have to be expensive.
I’m loving Tanzanite now. I wear some bracelets that have been gifted to me, and bracelets with my name and my oldest daughter’s name (I can’t buy the same style any longer or I would have them in my other daughters’ names too). I’m kinda a flower child at heart, so I layer necklaces and my bracelets. I dress to please me, though my husband says he likes to look at them. 



Just in these days the Trollbeads Peoples Bead competition has started. Have you ever participated as a designer? What do you think of this controversial contest? Many believe that it has become, for Trollbeads, a mere opportunity to accumulate ideas from which to draw on need. Do you agree?

Yes, I participated the first year with my daughter, who is an artist. I still think the designs we submitted are good ideas.
I think the competition is a fiasco. Many of the designs submitted are easily found in other brands (cupcakes, for example). That’s true, even of some that have made the finals, which I think is awful.
Seriously, does Trollbeads not know that?!
People don’t follow the stated rules, and none of these are weeded out prior to the first voting. The voting takes way too long, I give up. There definitely should be an option for neither.
And yes, I think Trollbeads has used some of the ideas after the competition.



Can you tell us a curiosity about you?

My youngest two daughters were adopted from China in 1997 and 1999. I returned with them and my other daughter in 2001 to take part in a documentary film on Chinese adoption made for the Chinese government. I was very active in Chinese adoptions, starting many individual list servs on Yahoo Groups, then turning them over to others. I still maintain the only list for adult adopted persons where adoptive parents need to listen, not discount what is being said. I have many dear friends, both parents and adult adoptees, from that group. My co-helper was adopted from Korea.



At the end of this interview I ask you: have you ever been to Italy? If so, which cities have you visited?

 

Yes, I love Italy and have been more than once. I’ve been on two Globus tours that went to Italy and a cruise that went from Rome to Israel. So I’ve driven through more of Italy than just the cities: Rome, the Vatican, Venice, Florence, Naples, Pompei, Capri.
I would love to go back!
 I remember I shopped for Trollbeads around the corner from the Spanish Steps, and I walked a long way to find the Tedora store with Italian city beads.
And everywhere you look in Italy it is very beautiful.



Karin, if you return to Italy I will wait for you in Modena, so I will let you visit the city of Pavarotti, world-renowned tenor, of Enzo Ferrari patron of the famous Ferrari of Formula 1 and beyond, of Maserati, of good food just think of the multi-starred chef Bottura, and the magnificent Duomo with the incomparable Ghirlandina which have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
