Intervista con Patty Jansen collezionista Trollbeads e creatrice di beads - Interview with Patty Jansen, Trollbeads collector and bead creator

Oggi è il compleanno di questo blog, il secondo per l'esattezza.

Due anni di recensioni, articoli ed interviste e mi fa piacere, per l'occasione, pubblicare la intervista fatta a Patty Jansen e, in qualche modo, festeggiare insieme a lei e a voi.

Patty Jansen, nota collezionista Trollbeads, viene dall'Olanda, ha studiato Turismo dopo un cambio di carriera in giovane età ed ha svolto diversi lavori in questo settore.

Lascerò ora la parola a Patty attraverso l'intervista che le ho fatto, affinché possiate conoscerla un poco più da vicino.

Patty, da quanti anni hai questa passione per i beads e quando hai deciso di metterla in pratica?

Tutto è incominciato con il concorso Trollbeads "People's Bead" nel 2012. Ero una dei finalisti ma non ce l'ho fatta, le persone però hanno iniziato a chiedermi se potevo realizzare i miei beads da sola, poiché avrebbero voluto averli. Quindi è da qui che è iniziata la ricerca per scoprire come potevo fare e, nel 2013, ho così creato i miei primi beads.

Cosa ti attrae di più e cosa ispira il tuo hobby?

Amo i beads, disegnarli e realizzarli mi permette di porre la mia immaginazione e la mia creatività in un minuscolo pezzo d'arte. Ad essere sincera un design deve comunicarmi qualcosa, se non lo "sento" non posso farcela a crearlo. Condividere i miei progetti con persone di tutto il mondo, mi ispira e mi porta tanta gioia e felicità.

Quali difficoltà incontri nella realizzazione?

Penso che le difficoltà che incontro durante la realizzazione siano legate ai dettagli: su di uno schizzo puoi fare quello che vuoi, ma se riproduci il disegno in scala scopri che alcuni dettagli che avevi in ​​mente non sono realizzabili, bisogna quindi apportare modifiche alla forma ed ai particolari per renderlo fattibile.

Cosa ti dà più soddisfazione mentre crei e quando hai finito?

La soddisfazione inizia dalle mie mani, non appena ho preparato il bead per l'ossidazione, inizio a lucidare, comincia così a brillare ed a mostrarmi la sua vera bellezza. Ci lavoro finché non sono soddisfatta. Quindi lo spedisco e attendo la reazione del cliente dopo averlo ricevuto, questo significa molto per me.

Ti piacerebbe che tutto questo divenisse la tua professione?

In realtà è iniziato come un hobby poi è diventato molto di più; sì, debbo dire che ora dedico molto tempo alla creazione di beads e non avrei mai pensato che sarebbe accaduto.

Puoi descrivere alcuni dei beads che hai realizzato?

Finora ho realizzato molti beads e questi sono alcuni di loro:

Tomte Nils e Tilda - €58 euro l'uno - sono due beads in argento ispirati agli gnomi scandinavi che compaiono in diverse storie natalizie.

Mouse King - €58 - un bead in argento che rappresenta uno dei personaggi del balletto Lo Schiaccianoci, una delle mie storie di Natale, nonché balletto, preferite di sempre.

Deep Sea Kraken - €55 - L'ispirazione per questo bead in argento proviene dalla mia visita alla casa di Jules Vernes a Nantes, in Francia, dove ho viaggiato nel suo mondo e attraverso il libro Ventimila leghe sotto i mari. Il Kraken regge tra i tentacoli una pietra acquamarina, che varia di colore da una all'altra.

Turn the Tide - €67 - è un bead in argento dal design astratto, della mia prima collezione "In Motion". Il mare crea creste nella sabbia ed è l'artista del disegno, il mare è l'unico che può cambiarlo. E lo stesso accade nella vita...se non ti piace come stanno andando le cose, l'unico che può cambiarle sei tu.

Gnomies in Love - €60 - una bead in argento che ho effettivamente disegnato per San Valentino 2021, fin quando ho capito che poteva anche rappresentare l'amore, gli abbracci e i baci che ci mancano nel mezzo di questa pandemia. Quindi sentitevi liberi di usare la vostra immaginazione per questo bead e dedicarlo a ciò che desiderate.

Tra i vari marchi noti e meno noti di beads e gli artigiani, quale apprezzi di più?

Ho iniziato a collezionare nel 2010, per il mio compleanno, ed ho studiato i cataloghi per scoprire quale marca avrei preferito, poiché volevo incominciare a collezionarne una. Ho dunque scelto Trollbeads perché amavo il loro design, i dettagli e le storie dietro i beads. Colleziono ancora Trollbeads, compongo solamente bracciali a tema e posso dire che, a volte, mi ci vogliono anni per completarne uno, ma è così divertente!

Ricordi quale bead hai acquistato per primo e perché?

Il mio primo bead in realtà è stato un braccialetto start Trollbeads composto da: Chiusura a Fiore, Deserto Rosa, Lampone. Siccome era il mio 31° compleanno ho aggiunto altri due beads: il Gufo e Milano. Penso che il Gufo abbia un design favoloso, i dettagli del piumaggio e intorno agli occhi sono davvero minuziosi.

Hai un bead preferito?

Il mio bead preferito? Penso sia tremendamente difficile scegliere un bead preferito,  quindi farò una "top tre" (Trollbeads):

- Gallo, perché ha una bella dimensione e per la qualità dell'argento. Con la passione che nutro per la Francia, il Gallo significa molto per me.

- Tibet (bead in vetro arancione con boccioli blu, bianchi e dorati), penso che il design sia sapientemente azzeccato e rappresenti perfettamente le piccole bandiere che si trovano sull'Himalaya. Per me significa molto perché è uno dei luoghi sul nostro pianeta che spero di visitare in futuro.

- Bead Diamante Coreano (Evergreen diamond) e Bead Diamante Russo (Siberian Frost), questi beads rappresentano perfettamente i colori delle olive e del ghiaccio eterno. Amo le olive e gli ulivi, e il ghiaccio blu mi ricorda i ghiacciai che purtroppo scompaiono velocemente, lo noto a volte durante i sentieri escursionistici che faccio.

Quando componi, quale armonia ricerchi? Simmetria, colore, forme o cos'altro?

Quando compongo un braccialetto…oh questo è così divertente…utilizzo  probabilmente il metodo più pazzo per comporlo. Utilizzo spesso le tavolozze dei colori. Scelgo un tema, aggiungo la tavolozza dei colori e vedo cosa appare sul mio schermo. Quindi salvo la tavolozza che mi piace di più e inizio a cercare beads che possano rappresentarne i colori. Cerco di evitare la simmetria perché ritengo sia noiosa, ma a volte non c'è scampo poiché i colori sono difficili da trovare o gli Unici rovinano l'attuale progetto. Quindi inizio semplicemente con una combinazione di "2-3-2" beads e quando mi soddisfa, ripeto di nuovo quest'ordine. Dipende da quanti argenti vorrei aggiungere o da quanti beads ho a disposizione per la composizione.

E' partito da poco il "People’s Bead di Trollbeads", il contest dove tutti possono partecipare come designer. Hai mai partecipato?

Penso che la maggior parte delle persone mi conosca grazie al People's Bead. Ho partecipato nel 2012. Il mio rivenditore sapeva che ero creativa e mi ha sfidata. Mi sono così presentata con dieci progetti, arrivando tra i finalisti, ma non ce l'ho fatta. Da allora ho partecipato ogni anno, tranne nel 2020. Penso che ormai le persone conoscano il mio stile e lo riconoscano anche quando non aggiungo al progetto il mio nome. Mi fanno i complimenti per il modo in cui disegno. Realizzo alcuni schizzi poi faccio il disegno in scala di grigi ed è come se il vero bead fosse visibile su di un foglio di carta. E sì, disegno ancora beads alla vecchia maniera, con una matita e un foglio di carta.

Il 2020 è stato un anno difficile per tutti a causa del Covid. Questa pandemia ha cambiato le tue abitudini? Ha cambiato il tuo modo di pensare ai beads?

Il 2020 è stato difficile per tutti e sembra che dobbiamo rimanere forti anche nel 2021. A causa del Covid ho avuto problemi con la produzione del mio Deep Sea Kraken, ma non appena chi mi realizza la fusione ha trovato il modo di continuare, le cose sono andate meglio e direi tornate alla normalità. Quando l'Olanda è stata bloccata per la pandemia, all'inizio non avevo idea di come fare a spedire ordini in tutto il mondo, ma poi ho scoperto che il mio ufficio postale era aperto e così ho potuto spedire. Alcune destinazioni richiedono più tempo degli ordini, ma finora tutti hanno ricevuto ciò che hanno acquistato e sono soddisfatti. Ci troviamo in questo difficile momento insieme e insieme dobbiamo affrontarlo, e l'unico modo è essere gentili e pazienti l'uno con l'altro.

Ho disegnato un bead nel 2019 con il giorno di San Valentino in testa, poi mi sono resa conto che a tutti noi mancano la famiglia e gli amici. Ci mancano gli abbracci e i baci, quindi penso che il mio ultimo design non sia esclusivo per San Valentino ma doni un po' di calore e amore anche in queste circostanze.

Oltre al tuo amore per i beads, quali sono le tue altre passioni?

Molte persone sanno che la mia più grande passione è la Francia. Casa è dove sta il cuore, giusto? Il paese è così bello e tutte le province, tutte le regioni sono diverse e hanno qualcosa che lo rendono unico, oltre al fatto che ne amo la lingua e la cucina tipica francese.

L'ho già accennato ma adoro fare escursioni in montagna. Nei Pirenei francesi ho sfidato me stessa scalando i sentieri più alti e più difficili e questo mi ha condotta nei luoghi più belli. È come se il resto del mondo non esistesse, una sensazione di libertà molto rilassante.

Amo cucinare e mi piace la cottura in forno. Utilizzo spesso ricette della cucina francese. Penso che dobbiamo prenderci cura di noi stessi e che sia meglio mangiare qualcosa di fresco, sano e delizioso. Mi piace quindi cucinare soprattutto verdure e pesce.

Infine Patty, puoi raccontare una curiosità su di te?

Ahahaha! Non so se posso rispondere a questa domanda perché non ho idea di cosa sia una vera curiosità su di me. Forse che mi interessa la storia? Che mi piace leggere i thriller quando ho tempo? Non ne ho idea quindi, dopo avere risposto a tutte le altre domande, questa credo possa essere saltata…ahahaha!

Patty ti ringrazio per questa intervista che mi hai concesso e ti perdono se non hai voluto svelarci delle curiosità sul tuo conto, dopotutto è risaputo che gli artisti vogliono mantenere un certo alone di mistero ;-)

Riguardo Patty, che è una persona molto riservata e gelosa del proprio lavoro, durante questa intervista ho avuto modo di comprendere la passione che mette nei suoi beads (e non solo) ed è totale, al punto da esserne gelosa come una madre lo è per i propri figli ma anche di esserne altrettanto orgogliosa e fiera di lasciarli andare affinché altri se ne prendano cura e possano apprezzare la loro bellezza e le loro caratteristiche.

Patty è una perfezionista ed anche se disegna a mano nulla è lasciato al caso, anzi, i suoi progetti sono accuratissimi ed è evidente la sua attitudine al disegno seppur da autodidatta. Purtroppo non mi è possibile mostrare un suo disegno poiché ci sono dei diritti di copyright a cui Patty tiene scrupolosamente. Va comunque compresa, poiché in questo ambiente è facile appropriarsi indebitamente delle idee altrui, quindi bisogna proteggersi come si può.

Chi ha conosciuto Patty, come me anni fa, agli inizi della sua carriera, ricorderà comunque senz'altro le sue partecipazioni alle varie edizioni del People's Bead Trollbeads ed i suoi bellissimi ed inconfondibili disegni realizzati interamente a mano libera. Chi non ha avuto la fortuna di vederli, dovrà fidarsi delle mie parole ;-) 

I beads che vedete in queste fotografie, sono tutti nati dalle sue passioni, dal suo modo di osservare ciò che la circonda, dai suoi viaggi, quindi si può dire, senza ombra di dubbio, che tutti questi beads abbiano un'anima, lo stesso animo sensibile che Patty mostra insieme ad una lodevole determinazione, caratteristica di chi ha deciso di credere nei propri sogni e non li ha lasciati invecchiare dentro ad un cassetto.

Discorrendo io e Patty abbiamo scoperto di essere accomunate da diversi interessi: per i beads, per la Francia, per i viaggi e la natura ed anche un percorso di vita per certi versi difficoltoso che, alla fine, altro non è che un passaggio per superare gli ostacoli, un po' come in un videogame, dove i protagonisti ad ogni prova superata avanzano sino ad arrivare alla meta. Patty sicuramente ha raggiunto tanti traguardi e tanta soddisfazione in questi anni, grazie al suo talento ed alla sua perseveranza.

Interview with Patty Jansen, Trollbeads collector and bead creator 

 

 

Today is the birthday of this blog, the second to be exact. Two years of reviews, articles and interviews and I am pleased, for the occasion, to publish the interview with Patty Jansen and, in some way, celebrate with her and you.


Patty Jansen, a well-known Trollbeads collector, comes from Holland, she studied Tourism after a career change at a young age and has done various jobs in this sector.
I will now leave the word to Patty about her, through the interview I did, so that you can get to know her a little more closely.

 

Patty, how many years have you had this passion for beads and when did you decide to put it into practice?

It all started with Trollbeads People's Bead in 2012. I was one of the finalists but didn't make it, people started asking if I could make my designs myself because they would love to get them. So that is where the research started, to find out how I could make it happen and in 2013 I released my first beads.

 
What attracts you most and what inspires your hobby?

I love beads, designing them and making them allows me to pit my imagination and creativity in a tiny piece of art. To be honest a design must speak to me, if I don't feel it I can't make it. Sharing my designs with people all over the world, inspires me and brings me so much joy and hapiness.


Can you describe some of the beads you made?

I have made many bead so far and these are some of them:

Tomte Nils and Tilda - €58 each - a silver bead inspired on the scandinavian gnomes which appear in several christmas stories.

Mouse King - €58 - a silver bead representing one of the caracters in the Nutcracker Suite Ballet... which is one of my favorit Christmas stories and ballet ever.

Deep Sea Kraken - €55 - The inspiration for this silver bead comes from my visit to Jules Vernes house in Nantes, France, where I travelled to his world and 20.000 Leagues under the sea. The Kraken holds a aquamarine stone, they vary in color.

Turn the Tide - €67 - is a silver bead with an abstract design from my first collection "In Motion". The sea creates ridges in the sand and is the artist of the pattern, the sea is the only one who can change it. It’s the same in life…if you don’t like how things are going, the only one who can change it is you.

Gnomies in Love - € 60 - a silver bead that I actually designed for Valentine's Day 2021, until I realized it could also represent the love, hugs and kisses we are missing in the middle of this pandemic. So feel free to use your imagination for this bead and dedicate it to whatever you wish.

 

What difficulties do you encounter in the realization?

I think the difficulties I encounter during the realization are the details: on a sketch you can do whatever you want, but if you make the design on scale you find out some of the details you had in mind are not possible, then you have to make changes in the shape and details to make it work.

 
What gives you the most satisfaction while you create and when you are finished?

The satisfaction starts in my hands, as soon as I prepared the bead for oxidation, I start polishing and it starts to shine and show me its real beauty. I work on it till I am satisfied. Then I ship it and await the customer's reaction when they gets it, that means so much to me.


Would you like all this to become your profession?

Actually it started as a hobby but it has become much more than that; yes, I must say that I spend lots of time on bead-making now and never thought this would happen.



Among the various well-known and lesser-known beads brands and craftsmen, which do you appreciate most?

I started collecting in 2010, for my birthday, and I have been studying brochures to find out which brand I would prefer, because I wanted to collect one brand. I decided to go for Trollbeads because I loved their designs, the details and the stories behind the beads. I still collect Trollbeads, I make only themed bracelets and I can say that it takes me years sometimes to complete a bracelet, but it is so much fun!


Do you remember which bead you purchased first and why?

My first bead was actually a Trollbeads start bracelet consisting of: Flower Lock, Pink Desert, Berry. Since it was my 31st birthday, I added two more beads: the Owl and Milan. I think the Owl has a fabulous design, the details in the plumage and around the eyes are really meticulous.


Do you have a favorite bead?

My favorit bead? I think it is sooooo hard to pick one favorit bead, so I make it a top three (Trollbeads):
- Rooster, because it is a good size and quality of silver and with my passion for France the rooster means a lot to me.
- Tibet (glass orange bead with blue, white and golden buds), I think the design is so good and clever and represents the tiny flags high up in the Himalayas perfectly. To me it means a lot because it is one of the places on our planet which I hope to visit in the future.
- Korean Diamond Bead (Evergreen diamond) and Russian Diamond Bead (Siberian Frost), these beads perfectly represents the colors of olives and eternal ice. I love olives and olive trees and the blue ice reminds me of glaciers which disappear quickly unfortunately, I spot sometimes during hiking trails I do.


When you compose, which harmony do you yearn for? Symmetry, color, shapes or what else?

When I compose a bracelet...oh this is so funny…I use probably the craziest way to make a bracelet. I often use color-palettes. I pick a theme, add color palette and see what appears on my screen. Then I save the color-palette I like the best and start searching for beads which can represent the colors. I try to avoid symmetry because I think it can be boring, but sometimes there is no escape because the colors are hard to find or Uniques  mess up the actual plan. I simply make a start of "2-3-2" beads and when I like it, I repeat this order again. It depends on how many silvers I would like to add or how many beads I have for the combo.


The "People’s Bead by Trollbeads", the contest in which everyone can participate as a designer, has started. Have you ever participated?

I think most people know me because of People's Bead. I entered since 2012. My retailer knew I was creative and challenged me. I joined with ten designs and was amongst the finalists but I didn't make it. I joined every year except in 2020. I think people recognize my style and work even when I don't add my name on it. People complimented me with the way I designs. I make a few sketches but then I draw the design in grey-scale and it is like the real bead is visible on a sheet of paper. And yes I still design beads in the old fashioned way with a pencil and a sheet of paper.


2020 was a tough year for everyone due tu Covid. Has this pandemic changed your habits? Did it change your way of thinking about beads?

2020 has been tough for everyone and it seems we have to stay strong in 2021 as well. Because of Covid I had trouble with the production of my Deep Sea Kraken, but as soon as my caster found a way to continue, things got better and even back to normal. When Holland got in lockdown, first I had no idea if I could ship orders worldwide, but then I found out my post-office is open and I can ship. Some destinations take longer than orders, but so far everyone got mail from me and is happy. We are in this together and we must get through this together and the only way is to be nice and patient with each other.

I designed a bead in 2019 with Valentine's Day in my head, but then I realized that we all miss family and friends. We miss the hugs and kisses, so I think my latest design is not typically for Valentine's Day but gives also some warmth and love in these circumstances.


Beyond your love for beads, what are your other passions?

Many people know that my biggest passion is France. Home is where the heart is, right? The country is so beautiful and all provinces, all parts are different and have something which makes it unique. I must also say that I love the language and the french kitchen.

I already mentionned it but I love hiking in the mountains. In the French Pyrenees I challenged myself to climb higher and more difficult trails and it brought me to the most beautiful places. It is like the rest of the world doesn't exist, it is the ultimate feeling of freedom and so relaxing.

I love cooking and baking as well. Often I use recipes from the French kitchen. I think  we must take good care of ourselves  and  we better eat something fresh, healthy and delicious. I especially love to cook vegetables and fish.


Finally Patty, can you tell a curiosity about yourself?

Hahaha! I don't know if I can answer this question because I have no idea what a real curiosity about me is. Maybe that I'm interested in history? That I like to read thrillers when I have time? I have no idea so, after answering all the other questions, I think this one could be skipped…hahaha!




Patty thank you for this interview you gave me and I forgive you if you didn't want to reveal some curiosities about you, after all it is well known that artists want to keep a certain aura of mystery ;-)

Regarding Patty, who is a very private person and jealous of her work, during this interview I had the opportunity to understand the passion she puts in her beads (and not only) and is total, to the point of being jealous like a mother is for their children but also to be equally proud and happy of letting them go so that others take care of them and can appreciate their beauty and their characteristics.

Patty is a perfectionist and even if she draws by hand nothing is left to chance, on the contrary, her projects are very accurate and her aptitude for drawing is evident, albeit self-taught. Unfortunately it is not possible for me to show a drawing of her as there are copyrights to which Patty scrupulously cares. However, you must be understood, since in this environment it is easy to misappropriate the ideas of others, so you have to protect yourself as you can. Anyone who met Patty, like me years ago, at the beginning of her career, will certainly remember her participation in the various editions of the People's Bead Trollbeads and her beautiful and unmistakable drawings made entirely by hand. Those who have not had the good fortune to see them will have to trust my words ;-)

The beads you see in these photographs are all born from her passions, from her way of observing what surrounds her, from her travels, so it can be said, without a shadow of a doubt, that all these beads have a soul, the same sensitive soul that Patty shows together with a commendable determination, characteristic of those who have decided to believe in their dreams and have not let them grow old in a drawer.

Talking about Patty and I, we discovered that we have some interests in common: for beads, for France, for travel and nature and also a somewhat difficult life path that, in the end, is nothing more than a step to overcome the obstacles, a bit like in a videogame, where the protagonists at each test passed advance until they reach the goal. Patty has certainly achieved many goals and a lot of satisfaction over the years, thanks to her talent and her perseverance.
