In questa edizione del famoso concorso People’s Bead indetto da Trollbeads, c’è una vittoria tutta italiana: è quella di Gaetano Preti “Sparrow” che va ad annoverarsi nella rosa dei designer Trollbeads con il Pendente Cielo Stellato.
Il tredici solitamente porta fortuna ed è proprio il caso di dire che questa tredicesima edizione a Gaetano ne ha portata tanta.
Il People’s Bead vide la luce per la prima volta nel 2009, anno in cui vinse l’australiana Suzanne Marie Hopping con il bead Pax.
Il concorso permette a chiunque di noi di partecipare in veste di aspirante designer, dando così sfogo alla fantasia anche se non si è dei disegnatori provetti, poiché si possono presentare disegni realizzati a computer, fotomontaggi, schizzi, collage. Chi sa disegnare a mano libera o si destreggia con programmi di grafica, sarà avvantaggiato nell’illustrare il proprio progetto, ma non è un requisito fondamentale. Questo denota che tutti, ma proprio tutti, possono divenire designer, purché di base ci sia una idea che possa essere tradotta in bead.
Chi valuta il progetto migliore? Sempre noi, che possiamo partecipare come giudici e, attraverso varie fasi di votazione, decretare il vincitore.
Procedendo in ordine cronologico, nel 2010 vinse Kristi Denning con il bead Orso Polare.
Nel 2011 vinse Denise Tong con il bead Onda Marina.
La edizione del 2012 fu speciale perché ci furono ben undici vincitori che diedero vita alla Collezione Spirituale: Daniele Celani con il bead Preghiera; Allan Bayer con il bead Dragone Spirituale; Carolyn Brettell con il bead Piuma; Elisabetta Marini con il bead Rosario; Marta Kubešová con il bead Luce di Spirito; Yumi Shimizu con il bead Giardino dell’Eden; Jolanda J. Hos con il bead Chakra Arcobaleno; Silvia Lacurto con il bead Acchiappasogni; Kevin Powell con il bead Luce Divina; Maria af Rolén con il bead Pensiero Positivo; Linda Caruso con il bead Mondo Riflesso.
Anche il 2013 fu una edizione speciale con cinque vincitori che diedero vita alla collezione I detti Tradizionali: Valentina Rocchi con il bead L’Amore è Cieco; Rachel Morris con il bead Ghiande; Shizue Ishiwata con il bead Sakura; Iris Heyer con il bead Rinascita; Rebecca Cresswell con il bead Lato Positivo.
Il 2014 invece vide unica vincitrice Mirjam Seling con il bead Equilibrio.
Nel 2015 vinse Amanda White con il bead Viaggio Tropicale.
A celebrazione dei quarant’anni del marchio, il concorso del 2016 lo vinse l’italiano Giuseppe Di Meo con il bead Viva la Vita.
Nel 2017 vinse Lily Sun con il bead Dragoni Danzanti che eccezionalmente, essendo un bead in argento, venne riprodotto in due versioni: tutto in argento ed in argento e oro.
Il 2018 vide Linda Kucina vincitrice con il bead Luce del Nord.
Nel 2019 vinse l’italiana Giada Manfredi con il bead Turtle Flower e nel 2020, per la seconda volta, vinse Amanda White con il bead Abbraccio della Natura.
Riguardo Gaetano Preti, ho avuto modo di intervistarlo poco più di un mese fa per essere risultato uno dei cinque vincitori del People’s Uniques, altro concorso Trollbeads in cui si partecipa con proprie fotografie di Unici che si vorrebbero vedere riprodotti nuovamente. Per chi non lo sapesse o non lo ricordasse, gli Unici sono quei beads in vetro che vengono realizzati in numero esiguo e differenti uno dall’altro per colore e design.

Dicci la verità…te la saresti aspettata dopo quella del People’s Uniques?

Il concorso del People’s Uniques lo vedo come un divertimento e vi partecipo perché amo scattare fotografie ed amo mettermi in gioco. Vincere il People’s Bead era un mio sogno, non me l’aspettavo ma ci speravo con tutto me stesso.
I beads in vetro ultimamente la fanno da padrone in casa Trollbeads, e che tu abbia vinto con il Pendente Cielo Stellato ne è la dimostrazione.
A prescindere dalle tue vittorie, sei più un tipo da beads in argento o da beads in vetro?
In realtà non sono un tipo né da argento né da vetro. La mia attenzione, da quando ho iniziato a collezionare, è sempre ricaduta sulle ambre. Non ne esiste una uguale ad un’altra: consistenza diversa, taglio diverso, colore diverso, forma diversa. Mi intriga osservare inclusioni di resti vegetali o di insetti all’interno.
Il significato legato al Pendente Cielo Stellato è molto evocativo, quasi intimo: quanto di te c’è in questo pendente, aldilà del lato puramente estetico?
Nel Pendente Cielo Stellato sono racchiusi tantissimi ricordi che ho di me quando ero bambino: le estati al mare e le notti a osservare il cielo pieno di stelle con gli occhi di un piccolo sognatore. Potrete comunque leggere più dettagliatamente come nasce il Pendente sul sito ufficiale Trollbeads.

So che avevi partecipato al concorso con altri progetti perché avevo votato uno di loro. Sei soddisfatto di avere vinto con questo o avresti preferito vedere riprodotto un altro bead?
Ogni mio progetto ha un significato ben preciso e quindi mi piacerebbe veder realizzato ognuno di essi. Tutti noi abbiamo preferenze ed anche io avevo il mio preferito: vedevo Pendente Cielo Stellato come il bead vincente.
Immaginando di partecipare anche il prossimo anno, cosa miglioreresti, a livello “tecnico”, nel concorso?
Io, ad esempio, credo di non essere riuscita a vedere tutte le proposte e quindi, da giurata, un votazione la mia incompleta.
Nel mio giro di votazione, nemmeno io sono riuscito a vedere tutti i miei progetti, il Pendente ad esempio non mi è proprio uscito. Per le prossime edizioni desidererei vedere una vera e propria selezione dei progetti da parte di Trollbeads. Sono state presentate cose abbastanza insensate che con il progettare non avevano nulla a che vedere, ad esempio molti partecipanti hanno proposto beads già in commercio.
Ci racconti come hai ricevuto la notizia della vittoria e quale è stata la tua reazione?
Il premio in cosa è consistito?
Qualche giorno dopo la chiusura del concorso mi arriva una mail ufficiale da Trollbeads Danimarca.
Mentre leggevo la mail avevo l’iPhone che mi tremava tra le mani ed il cuore che batteva forte per la felicità. Un’emozione davvero unica!!!!
Il premio più importante è quello di essere entrato a far parte della rosa dei designer della Trollbeads, di gran lunga il premio non materiale che desideravo da sempre. Quello materiale, come da regole del concorso, vede come piccolo trofeo la realizzazione dello stesso progetto in oro, oltre quello in argento.
Per molti appassionati e collezionisti, divenire designer Trollbeads è un sogno. Il tuo si è avverato. Cosa suggerisci a chi intende intraprendere questa avventura ed a chi ci prova da tempo senza successo?
Vincere il People’s Bead dopo tre anni che ci provavo, è davvero un sogno che si avvera.
A chi ci prova da tempo dico di non arrendersi perché la vittoria può essere lì, dietro l’angolo. Auguro loro di realizzare il proprio sogno. Niente è impossibile!
Pendente Cielo Stellato andrà a completare l’omonimo bracciale start del 2017 che ha avuto un grande successo. Puoi mostrare una composizione?
Tra le composizioni che ho creato per adattare il mio Pendente Cielo Stellato, eccone una con il bead “Sogno” vincitore del People’s Uniques, il vetro dell’omonimo bracciale start e delle ambre che danno luce come fossero stelle.

Gaetano, dopo averci rivelato, nella scorsa intervista, alcune tue manie da collezionista, ora puoi rivelarci invece un tuo incubo da collezionista?
Un mio incubo da collezionista e che mi fa venir la febbre anche solo a pensarci, è quando i vetri si scheggiano o si graffiano. Proprio non sopporto un vetro non perfetto!!!
Quindi ricevere un bead danneggiato è sicuramente un incubo ad occhi aperti.
Gaetano come darti torto?! Un vetro scheggiato credo sia lo spauracchio di molti.

Pendente Cielo Stellato, come ho già scritto, è il perfetto proseguimento dell’omonimo bracciale start, ma anche da solo in un bangle o nella collana, ed ecco che illumina come fosse un punto luce.
La sfaccettatura della sfera in vetro, con iridescenze che somigliano al blu reale, insieme al tocco di graniglia d'avventurina, che rende ed enfatizza l’effetto di un cielo stellato, risultano estremamente eleganti e qualsiasi composizione si vada a creare, cattura l’attenzione, difficile distogliere lo sguardo.
Gli esemplari da me visionati risultano essere abbastanza simili in colore e dimensione, con piccole e naturali differenze date dal fatto a mano.
Alcuni pendenti che presentano l’iridescenza chiara in apice, lasciano intravedere il perno che trattiene la sfera, senza però risultare troppo invadente o penalizzante.
Per chi possiede il bracciale start Cielo Stellato ed intende acquistare il Pendente per abbinarlo, suggerisco di metterlo a confronto, poiché le sfumature di colore possono essere di tono differente. Anche qui mi preme dire però che sono sempre caratteristiche del fatto a mano e, nel caso del bracciale start, di una produzione di alcuni anni fa, quindi per forza di cose con ovvie disuguaglianze.
Il pendente come tipo di gioiello può non piacere, io stessa prediligo il bead classico col foro centrale, ma nel caso di questo pendente in particolare la sua bellezza è indubbia. Bisogna dare atto a Gaetano che l’idea di ricreare un cielo pendente si è rivelata buona, anzi direi vincente ;-)
Un solo neo: il costo.
€75 non è esattamente un prezzo popolare. Per come la vedo io, un bead che vince perché votato dalla gente, dovrebbe avere un costo medio basso, così da permettere a tutti di poterlo acquistare, soprattutto tutti quelli che lo hanno votato. E se questo significa mettere dei limiti alla creazione, credo possa essere accettato, basta inserire nel regolamento che i progetti presentati non debbono prevedere lavorazioni costose.
Ecco questo è il mio personale suggerimento per il prossimo concorso Trollbeads del 2022.
Per il bracciale che ho composto sono stata ispirata dalla copertina del libro “Crepitio di stelle” di Jón Kalman Stefánsson, tradotto da Silvia Cosimini.
Un libro che conduce il lettore a ritroso nei meandri della memoria del protagonista, luoghi e momenti d’infanzia, un vissuto tribolato, amore e vita in sostanza, cercando di rimettere insieme i pezzi per dare senso al presente.
Un libro evocativo, a tratti poetico, come suggerisce questo incipit della terza parte: “Di che cosa sono fatti i legami che uniscono due persone, e che nel disorientamento generale sono stati definiti amore? È una domanda importante perché a volte sembra proprio che niente riesca a separare due persone, né l’implacabile inerzia della quotidianità né la forza esplosiva di un singolo istante”.
Ed ora, come sempre, vi invito a commentare questo articolo con le vostre impressioni sul Pendente Cielo Stellato, il cui motto recita: “Splendida è la notte. People's Bead Trollbeads 2021: interview with the winner Gaetano Preti "Sparrow"
In this edition of the famous People's Bead competition organized by Trollbeads, there is an all-Italian victory: it is that of Gaetano Preti "Sparrow" who is included in the Trollbeads designer roster with the Wishful Sky Tassel.
Thirteen usually brings luck and it is appropriate to say that this thirteenth edition has brought a lot to Gaetano.
The People's Bead saw the light for the first time in 2009, the year in which Australian Suzanne Marie Hopping won with the bead Pax.
The competition allows anyone of us to participate as an aspiring designer, thus giving vent to the imagination even if you are not experienced designers, since you can submit computer-made drawings, photomontages, sketches, collages. Those who can draw freehand or juggle with graphics programs will have an advantage in illustrating their project, but it is not a fundamental requirement. This denotes that everyone, absolutely everyone, can become a designer, as long as there is an idea that can be translated into bead.
Who evaluates the best project? Always us, who can participate as judges and, through various stages of voting, decree the winner.
Proceeding in chronological order, in 2010 Kristi Denning won with the Ice Bear Bead.
In 2011 Denise Tong won with the Rolling Waves Bead.
The 2012 edition was special because there were eleven winners who gave life to the Spiritual Collection: Daniele Celani with the Prayer Pendant; Allan Bayer with the Happy Dragon Bead; Carolyn Brettell with the Feather Bead; Elisabetta Marini with the Rosary Bead; Marta Kubešová with the Spirit Light Bead; Yumi Shimizu with the Heaven’s Garden Bead; Jolanda J. Hos with the Chakra Colours Bead; Silvia Lacurto with Dream Catcher Bead; Kevin Powell with the Loving Light Bead; Maria af Rolén with the Stay Positive Bead; Linda Caruso with the World Within.
2013 was also a special edition with five winners who gave life to the Traditional Sayings Collection: Valentina Rocchi with the Love is Blind Bead; Rachel Morris with the Little Acorns Bead; Shizue Ishiwata with the Sakura Bead; Iris Heyer with the This too… Bead; Rebecca Cresswell with the Silver Lining Bead.
2014 instead saw the only winner Mirjam Seling with the Perfect Balance Bead.
In 2015, Amanda White won with the Tropical Travels Bead.
In celebration of the brand's forty years, the 2016 competition was won by the Italian Giuseppe Di Meo with the Celebrate Life Bead.
In 2017 Lily Sun won with the Dancing Dragons Bead which exceptionally, being a silver bead, was reproduced in two versions: all in silver and in silver and gold.
2018 saw Linda Kucina winning with the Northern Light Magic Bead.
In 2019 the Italian Giada Manfredi won with the Turtle Flower Bead and in 2020, for the second time, Amanda White won with the Framed by Ivy Bead.
Regarding Gaetano Preti, I was able to interview him a little over a month ago for being one of the five winners of the People's Uniques, another Trollbeads competition in which you participate with your own photographs of Uniques that you would like to see reproduced again. For those who do not know or do not remember, the Uniques are those glass beads that are made in small numbers and different from each other in color and design.

Tell us the truth... would you have expected it after the People's Uniques?
Thanks for the compliments Elena!
I see the People's Uniques competition as fun and I participate in it because I love taking pictures and I love to get involved. Winning the People's Bead was a dream of mine, I didn't expect it but I hoped for it with all my heart.
The glass beads lately are the masters in the Trollbeads house, and that you have won with the Wishful Sky Tassel is the proof.
Regardless of your wins, are you more of a silver bead or glass bead type?
I'm not actually a silver or glass type. My attention, since I started collecting, has always fallen on ambers. No one is the same as another: different texture, different cut, different color, different shape. It intrigues me to observe inclusions of plant remains or insects inside.
The meaning linked to the Wishful Sky Tassel is very evocative, almost intimate: how much of you is in this pendant, beyond the purely aesthetic side?
The Wishful Sky Tassel contains many memories I have of myself when I was a child: summers at the sea and nights observing the sky full of stars with the eyes of a little dreamer. However, you can read in more detail how the Pendant is born on the official Trollbeads website.
I know you entered the competition with other projects because I voted for one of them. Are you satisfied that you won with this or would you have preferred to see another bead reproduced?
Each of my projects has a very specific meaning and therefore I would like to see each of them realized. We all have preferences and I also had my favorite: I saw the Wishful Sky Tassel as the winning bead.
Imagining to participate again next year, what would you improve, on a "technical" level, in the competition?
For example, I believe that I have not been able to see all the proposals and therefore, as a juror, my vote is incomplete.
In my round of voting, not even I was able to see all my projects, the Pendant for example just didn't come out. For the next editions I would like to see a real selection of projects by Trollbeads. Quite senseless things were presented that had nothing to do with designing, for example many participants proposed beads already on the market.
Can you tell us how you received the news of the victory and what was your reaction?
What did the prize consist of?
A few days after the contest closes, an official email arrives from Trollbeads Denmark.
While I was reading the email I had my iPhone trembling in my hands and my heart breating fast with happiness. A truly unique emotion!!!!
The most important prize is to have joined the Trollbeads designer roster, by far the non-material prize I have always wanted. The material one, as per the rules of the competition, sees as a small trophy the realization of the same project in gold, in addition to the silver one.
For many fans and collectors, becoming a Trollbeads designer is a dream. Yours came true. What do you suggest to those who intend to undertake this adventure and to those who have tried for some time without success?
Winning the People's Bead after three years of trying is really a dream come true.
To those who have been trying for some time, I tell them not to give up because victory can be there, just around the corner. I wish them to make their dream come true. Nothing is impossible!
Wishful Sky Tassel will complete the 2017 start bracelet of the same name, which was a great success. Can you show a composition?
Among the compositions I created to adapt my Wishful Sky Tassel, here is one with the Egyptian Stripe bead winner of the People's Uniques, the glass of the homonymous start bracelet and ambers that give light as if they were stars.
(Editor's note = at the time of the interview Gaetano had not yet received the Pendant, which is why it is missing in its composition)
Gaetano, after having revealed to us, in the last interview, some of your collector's obsessions, can you now reveal to us your collector's nightmare instead?
A collector's nightmare of mine and one that makes me feverish just thinking about it, is when the glass chips or scratches. I just can't stand a glass that's not perfect !!!
So getting a damaged bead is definitely a waking nightmare.
Gaetano how to blame you ?! I think a splintered glass is the bugbear of many.

Wishful Sky Tassel, as I have already written, is the perfect continuation of the homonymous start bracelet, but also alone in a bangle or necklace, and here it lights up as if it were a point of light.
The facet of the glass sphere, with iridescences that resemble royal blue, together with the touch of aventurine grit, which renders and emphasizes the effect of a starry sky, are extremely elegant and any composition that is created captures the attention, difficult to look away.
The specimens I inspected appear to be quite similar in color and size, with small and natural differences given by the handmade.
Some pendants that have clear iridescence at the apex reveal the pin that holds the sphere, without being too intrusive or penalizing.
For those who own the Wishful Sky start bracelet and intend to buy the Pendant to match it, I suggest comparing it, since the shades of color can be of different tones. Even here, however, I would like to say that they are always characteristics of the handmade and, in the case of the start bracelet, of a production of a few years ago, therefore inevitably with obvious inequalities.
The pendant as a type of jewel may not like it, I myself prefer the classic bead with the central hole, but in the case of this pendant in particular its beauty is undoubted. Gaetano must be acknowledged that the idea of recreating a leaning sky turned out to be good, indeed I would say winning ;-)
One drawback: the cost.
€ 75 is not exactly a popular price. As I see it, a bead that wins because it is voted for by the people, should have a low average cost, so as to allow everyone to be able to buy it, especially all those who voted for it. And if this means putting limits on creation, I think it can be accepted, just include in the regulation that the projects presented must not involve expensive work.
Here is my personal tip for the next Trollbeads contest in 2022.
For the bracelet I composed I was inspired by the cover of the book “Crepitio di stelle” by Jón Kalman Stefánsson, translated by Silvia Cosimini.
A book that leads the reader back into the maze of the protagonist's memory, places and moments of childhood, a troubled experience, love and life in essence, trying to put the pieces back together to give meaning to the present.
An evocative, at times poetic book, as this opening of the third part suggests: “What are the bonds that unite two people made of, and which in general disorientation have been defined as love? It is an important question because sometimes it seems that nothing can separate two people, neither the relentless inertia of everyday life nor the explosive force of a single moment “.
